What Are The
Steps Required?
What checks need to be conducted to verify a 'Right to Work' in the UK?
To establish a statutory excuse against liability for a civil penalty your prospective
worker must provide you with original documents which you should inspect with the
following reasonable steps before they start work.
Once presented with the necessary document(s), you must:

satisfy
yourself that the document(s) are valid and genuine and have not been tampered
with

check
that any photographs and birth dates on the documents match the applicant's appearance

check
information in the job application against the documents to ensure the details match

check that appropriate
expiry dates have not been passed

check that the document(s) allow the worker to do the work on offer by examining
any United Kingdom Government

endorsements (stamps, vignettes etc).
Note that you are not expected to be an expert on forged documents, however the
UK Border Agency do require you to do more than simply photocopy the document. All
you need to do is conduct simple intuitive online check with Vero Right to Work, without the
need for training, to satisfy yourself that the document(s) presented are genuine
and relate to the person presenting them.
Vero Right to Work helps employers ensure that they employ only legitimate workers.
Avoiding racial discrimination
The prevention of illegal working can often raise race discrimination issues. When
carrying out checks on their employees, employers must be careful not to use discriminatory
recruitment practices. The Avoiding racial discrimination page explains how employers
can avoid unlawful discrimination in their recruitment practices while seeking to
prevent illegal working.
